Hiring a Birth Doula in Hampshire or West Sussex: What You Need to Know

peaceful pregnant women at home

If you're expecting a baby in Hampshire or West Sussex, you might be wondering whether hiring a birth doula is right for you. Whether you're planning to give birth at a hospital, a midwife-led birth centre or at home - having a doula means having someone in your corner who is there entirely for you.

In this guide, I'll share what a doula does, how I support births across this region and what makes doula care different.

What is a role of a Birth Doula?

A birth doula is a trained companion who supports you emotionally, physically and practically before, during and just after birth. Unlike a midwife, a doula doesn't provide clinical care - instead, they focus entirely on your experience.

A doula can help you:

  • Explore what you actually want for your birth - without pressure or judgment

  • Prepare for the realities of the NHS maternity system so you feel grounded and confident in your choices

  • Approach birth calmly and intuitively, rather than being overwhelmed by fear or conflicting information

  • Feel genuinely heard and looked after during labour

  • Navigate those precious first hours after birth with calm, unhurried support for bonding, skin-to-skin contact and feeding

Why more families are hiring Doulas

Giving birth is a deeply personal experience, and having continuous, dedicated support can make all the difference. In today's NHS maternity services, you may meet your midwife for the first time during labour, experience multiple midwives changing shifts or find that one midwife is caring for several families simultaneously. This means hospitals are working incredibly hard to provide safe care despite significant staffing challenges.

This is where doulas come in. They offer an unbiased presence to help personalise your birth preparation, explore options that truly feel right for you and let midwives focus on the clinical care they're trained for.

With continuous support throughout labour and those first hours after birth, you gain the confidence to move through the experience feeling safe, steady and genuinely looked after.

My Approach as a Doula

I believe birth works best when a woman feels safe, unhurried and trusted - by the people around her and by herself.

My role isn't to manage your birth or fill it with techniques and tools. It's to protect your space, your peace and your experience. To be a calm, familiar presence that allows everything to unfold as naturally as possible.

I come to you - day or night, early labour or well established. I stay until you and your baby are safe, warm and resting. And in those first hours after birth, I make sure you are genuinely looked after - not just ticked off a list.

When you work with me, you can expect:

  • A first conversation - no commitment, no pressure

  • Antenatal conversations to prepare emotionally and practically

  • On-call availability from three weeks before your due date

  • Continuous support during labour and birth

  • Postnatal visit/s to reflect, rest and settle in

I support all kinds of births - from water births at home to planned hospital deliveries. My role is to walk alongside you with trust, presence, and deep respect. You can find out more about my services here.

Is a Doula Right for Me?

If you want to feel genuinely looked after - not managed, not rushed, not ticked off a list - then yes, a doula might be exactly what you're looking for.

Whether you're preparing for your first birth, hoping to have a different experience from a previous one, or simply wanting someone steady and present in your corner - I'm here.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book a doula?

As early as possible - ideally in the first or second trimester. This gives us time to build a real relationship and prepare together. That said, I sometimes take on last-minute bookings depending on availability and have a sliding scale paying option for birth only support.

What if my birth plan changes?

That's okay. Whether your labour unfolds differently than expected or you need to adapt to a different setting or type of birth, I remain a calm, steady presence to help you navigate each step.

Do doulas support all types of birth - including inductions or planned caesareans?

Yes. My role is to support you - not a particular kind of birth. I've supported families through inductions, unplanned and planned caesareans, and everything in between.

What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?

Midwives are responsible for your clinical safety. A doula supports your emotional wellbeing, your comfort and your experience - we work alongside each other to support you as a whole person.

Will a doula replace my partner?

Not at all. I enhance their role by helping them feel confident and involved. Many partners say they feel more connected and supported with a doula present.

Can you help with postnatal support?

Yes - I offer postnatal visits to reflect on the birth and support your recovery, feeding and emotional wellbeing. You can also book dedicated postnatal support if needed.

Do you work with first-time parents and those who've had difficult previous births?

Yes. The women I support are usually either preparing for birth for the first time or hoping for a different experience from a previous one. I create a space where you feel heard, respected and genuinely supported - no matter your history.

What does it cost?

Birth doula support is available on a sliding scale of £800 to £1,200. A combined birth and postnatal package is £1,500. Birth preparation sessions start from £85. Payment plans are available. Full details on my services page.
